Welcome to Steve Nash Youth Basketball - a national youth basketball program designed to develop fundamental skills, sportsmanship and a love of the game of basketball.  This Canada Basketball grassroots initiative empowers community basketball groups, facilities, and clubs across Canada in an effort to positively influence youth through the sport of basketball.

The model for Steve Nash Youth Basketball [SNYB] is based on an extensive review of existing community basketball programs across North America.  As a result, the SNYB curriculum is flexible enough to allow organizers to adapt the program to their needs and resources while remaining aligned with the Sport Canada Long-Term Athlete Development [LTAD] Model.

To provide opportunities for youth between the ages of 6-12 across Canada to be a part of SNYB

To address the need for a consistent and appropriate basketball curriculum aligned with the LTAD model

To offer coaches and officials training and support through the National Coaching Certification Program [NCCP]

To encourage youth to pursue high performance opportunities by acting as the first step of the Canada Basketball developmental pathway

To allow participants to maximize their potential, using basketball as a vehicle to develop self-esteem, leadership, and other life skills

The Canada Basketball athlete development model is based on the Canadian Sport for Life Long-term Athlete Development [CS4L-LTAD] Model and resource paper.  Developed by Canadian world leaders in youth sport development, the model is athlete centered, coach driven, and administratively supported.  The LTAD Model integrates elite, community, and scholastic sport, athletes with a disability, physical education, and the general health of the nation.

LTAD ensures physical literacy in all children, providing the foundation for optimized training, competition, and recovery programs based on the level of maturation of the young athlete.  Physical literacy is the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge, and understanding to value and take responsibility for engagement in physical activities for life.  Encouraging healthy, lifelong activity and wellness while providing a training path for high performance athletes, the LTAD Model accommodates individuals of all skills and abilities.

Canada Basketball and SNYB fully adopt and endorse the LTAD Model, which provides the best basis to develop future elite athletes.  With the goal of ensuring youth athletes receive optimal development, SNYB follows the model's 10 key factors while focusing the curriculum on the FUNdamentals and Learn-to-Train stages.

Steve Nash Youth Basketball is awesome - the best thing that could ever happen to this community.  My daughter is in the program.  She's really shy, but now she's really open and out there having a good time.  My son is going to be doing it next year, and we're really looking forward to it.

Roger James, Parent [Lytton, BC]

Coaching the Steve Nash Youth Basketball has been such an honour! I am so glad that I was asked to coach this program! The kids absolutely loved the program - they really enjoyed all the games and drills! They said it was challenging, but enjoyable and competitive. Their fundamental skills have greatly improved over the course of the 12 weeks, with their dribbling being the most improved! The kids have also learned that the game of basketball is not all about themselves, and that they can only win as a team which encouraged the kids to pass more frequently and be more competitive against each other!

I believe that this program is an amazing asset to the city of Portage because kids are participating in something positive that`s challenging them physically and mentally. I saw kids come out of their comfort zones and try something that they thought they could never do! That is absolutely priceless. I would love to see this program back in Portage!

Krystal Drain, Coach [Portage La Prairie, MB]

I love Steve Nash Youth Basketball! I made many friends and learned lots. I liked coming every week to practice to get better at basketball and have fun!
